Welcome from Jamie Williamson, Head of The Windward School
Welcome to the website of The Windward School, the premier school for students in grades 1-9 with dyslexia and language-based learning disabilities. With two campuses in White Plains and one campus on the Upper East Side of New York City, our proven, research-based instructional program combined with the dedication of our expertly-trained teachers has set generations of children on the road to reading success and writing proficiency. At Windward, students learn the skills they need to succeed academically and to develop socially and emotionally.
Faculty
The Windward School could not achieve its mission without a faculty composed of teachers who have received intensive training in the School’s specialized multisensory instructional strategies through the Windward Teacher Training Program. Regardless of education or employment, all new Windward faculty members spend two years as an assistant teacher before assuming head teaching responsibilities. All Windward faculty also attend weekly professional development.
Parents/Guardians
Windward considers parents and guardians to be essential partners in fostering self-esteem and building effective coping skills. Therefore, a significant effort is made to work with parents and guardians in helping them understand and deal with their children’s learning difficulties. There are individual parent/teacher conferences as well as a variety of workshops, parent seminars, and lectures on issues related to learning disabilities offered by The Windward Institute.
Windward believes that a learning disability need not hinder a child from achieving his or her full potential. The goal of our administration, faculty, and staff is to ensure that every Windward student reads with confidence, writes with purpose, and achieves the skills necessary to lead a life of fulfillment and accomplishment. Our School truly makes a difference in the lives of our students and their families.
