Windward Language Arts program in consideration for first NYC DOE public school initiative for struggling readers

Literacy Academy Collective (LAC) executive members Akeela Azcuy, Founder, Ruth Genn, Founder, and Ilia Edwards, Pilot Director, visited The Windward School on March 2, 2023, with New York City DOE officials Roberto Padilla, Superintendent for District 7, and Bethany Poolman, Interim Acting School Leader for SBLA, to observe The Windward School’s language arts program firsthand, escorted by Betsy Duffy, Director of Language Arts and Instruction and Alexis Pochna, Director of The Windward Institute. The cohort observed PAF reading program skills dictations, a narrative reading lesson, and an expository writing lesson in grades 2, 3, and 5, discussing program considerations as The Literacy Academy Collective continues to realize their mission of creating the first NYC DOE public school in the Bronx for children with language-based learning disabilities and other struggling readers.
