Experts Converge to Discuss the Strain on Literacy in Latin America and Ways to Mitigate the Effects of COVID-19

Windward parent and Co-Founder of Intelexia, Magdalena Zavalía Miguens will welcome experts to exchange their views on post-COVID literacy in Latin America.

COVID-19 has caused tremendous strain on education systems around the world. School closures, social distancing, e-learning have been implemented at various levels; however, Latin America has been the most affected region when it comes to teaching. With prolonged school closings, limited access to the Internet and technology, children and teachers have been struggling to learn, especially children who are learning to read.

Ms. Zavalia will moderate experts as they give an overview of the situation on the Latin American continent and the challenges it faces, as well as the specifics of literacy in the context of COVID-19. Additionally, experts will share what actions need to be taken to mitigate the long-term effects of COVID-19 on literacy and give examples of what can be done now.

Experts joining the discussing include Augusto Buchweitz, PhD, Professor at Pontifîcia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil); Florencia Salvarezza, PhD, Professor at Universidad de Favaloro (Argentina); Horacio Alvarez Marinelli, Senior Specialist in Education at Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo; and Emanuela di Gropello, Leader of Education Practice in Latin America and the Caribbean at Banco Mundial.
