Why this course:

Research shows that reading fluency—reading with accuracy, automaticity, and prosody—serves as a bridge between decoding and reading comprehension. Reading words with automaticity allows readers to devote more cognitive attention to comprehension, and effective approaches to developing reading fluency often draw on and foster both language comprehension and word recognition. This class supports teachers in understanding fluency’s role within a child’s literacy development and how to implement effective teaching practices and assessment techniques for developing fluency.

  • Examine the role and characteristics of fluent reading including the component skills of accuracy, rate, and prosody 
  • Analyze the connection between fluency, decoding, and comprehension
