Best Practices for Comprehension Instruction
Comprehension support requires supporting readers before, during, and after. In this workshop, Dr. Molly Ness – teacher educator, reading researcher, and associate professor of education at Fordham University – unpacks the complexities of comprehension and its underlying factors. We focus on engaging comprehension strategies that encourage metacognition and higher-level thinking. In addition to understanding the role of background knowledge, we will explore the Gradual Release of Responsibility as an instructional framework to foster comprehension.
