Windward Students Capture Moments with Photography Club

The Photography Club is an after-school club led by Westchester Middle School Teacher Ms. Frawley, and she leads the students in developing different photography skills such as composition, perspective, lighting, and editing. The photographers-in-training also learn about types of images such as portraits, wildlife/pet photography, landscapes, and food.

The Photography Club has been offered at Windward for many years, but this year’s virtual platform for all after-school programs has allowed the club to bring together students from both the Westchester and Manhattan campuses. There was such a large interest in photography that there are two cohorts of the club—one group meets on Mondays, and the other on Thursdays.

The club meets for one hour each week and includes middle school students in Grades 5-9. Each meeting starts with students sharing any photos they have taken since their last meeting before diving into the lesson of the week. Most students in the club use their cell phone cameras, while a few others have DSLR cameras. The after-school clubs at Windward are an engaging social extracurricular for students, and Ms. Frawley noted that the participants’ most favorite activity is silly photo scavenger hunts around their homes.
