Windward sponsored three faculty and staff members to participate in this year’s annual NYSAIS LGBTQ+ gathering on April 15. The virtual event “Poetry is Not a Luxury: Activism, Poetry, and Black Feminist Joy” welcomed poet Roya Marsh and Professor Mecca Jamilah Sullivan, PhD, for a cross-dialogue and Q&A session on Audre Lorde’s ideas about cultivating joy as an act of resistance. The presenters talked about enlivening activism through art, poetry, hip-hop, and other creative forms.
Manhattan Middle School Teacher Charlotte Van Voorhis said of the event, “Even though I am an educator during the day, I am a student and learning continually throughout life. It was enriching to hear from incredibly accomplished and knowledgeable speakers about Audrey Lorde’s poetry and their own work. Being a part of the LGBTQ+ community, it was exciting to have a space to revel with each other. I came away feeling rejuvenated and with lots to think about.”
