The Windward School Announces Appointment of Daniele L. Kass, EdD, as Head of Manhattan Lower and Middle Schools

After an extensive and competitive search, The Windward School announced the appointment of Daniele L. Kass, EdD, as the next Head of Manhattan Lower and Middle Schools. Dr. Kass will begin her employment on July 12, 2021, and she will succeed Ms. Leslie Zuckerwise who announced her retirement earlier this year. 

As a classroom instructor for over 17 years, Dr. Kass has taught students in public and independent schools from preschool through eighth grade, as well as young adults and graduate students at the university level. In 2001 and 2010, Dr. Kass was recognized and awarded as a Bergen County District Teacher of the Year recipient and New Jersey State Educator of the Year nominee. 

Her professional experience extends to serving as a mentor teacher and administrator, supporting adult learners in schools and educational training programs, and forming global partnerships with schools, teachers, students, and programs throughout the country. An active member of the International Dyslexia Association, she has conducted research studies on educational methodology and delivery, published in professional journals, and is the author of three published children’s books.  

Dr. Kass’s passion for students of diverse learning profiles ignited her drive in her current position as the director of curriculum and instruction and primary school division head at The Winston School of Short Hills, which she has held since 2014. In this dual role, she developed the Primary School Program; organized and coordinated the school’s academic curricular programs in grades 1-8; facilitated and organized a robust professional development program; co-chaired Winston’s successful 2018 decennial accreditation; and developed and led the school’s diversity, equity and inclusion program, ABIDE. During her time at Winston, Dr. Kass has also sent teachers to learn The Windward School methodology from courses and workshops offered through The Windward Institute. 

Dr. Kass graduated Cum Laude with a BA in psychology from The State University of New York at Albany. Additionally, she graduated Summa Cum Laude from New York University in New York City, NY, with a MA in special education. She earned a doctorate in education from Walden University in Minneapolis, MN. Modeling a love for lifelong learning, Dr. Kass is upon completion of a post-doctoral certification program in school management and leadership through a collaborative partnership of Harvard University’s Schools of Business and Graduate School of Education. 

Dr. Kass, her three children, her husband, and their Goldendoodle reside in Montvale, New Jersey. In her spare time, Dr. Kass is an avid reader, explorer, painter and photographer. Dr. Kass will be located at The Windward School’s Manhattan Lower and Middle School campus located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
