The Windward School, the preeminent school for remediating children in grades 1-9 with language-based learning disabilities including dyslexia, announced the appointment of Omar Mayyasi, PhD, CPA, as Chief Financial Officer of The Windward School, after an extensive national search. Dr. Mayyasi will begin his employment on June 7, 2021, and The Windward School looks forward to him joining the community.
“Dr. Mayyasi joins a strong organization thanks to the leadership and guidance of Stephen R. Littell, Assistant Head of School and Director of Finance, who led the School’s business office for the past 21 years. Mr. Littell is retiring at the end of the 2020-2021 school year. I thank Mr. Littell for his many contributions, and Windward wishes him the best in his retirement,” remarked Jamie Williamson, Head of School.
A critical and new role for The Windward School, the chief financial officer provides leadership, management and oversight of all activities within the finance and administration of the School and serves on the finance committee, as well as other committees as directed, of the School’s Board of Trustees. Additionally, the CFO provides support and works in partnership with the head of school.
Dr. Mayyasi joins Windward with over 15 years of solid experience in finance, operations, and change management. During his career, Dr. Mayyasi has held positions of increasing responsibility, starting as a financial analyst and rising to a senior leadership position at Teachers College, Columbia University, as Assistant Vice President for Budget and Planning. As AVP, Dr. Mayyasi was responsible for developing and monitoring a $300 million budget, overseeing procurement and select auxiliary operations. At different points of his 17 years at Teachers College, Columbia University, he has overseen institutional savings of over $3 million, and managed accounting, FP&A, long-range financial planning, cost control and capital improvement strategies.

Dr. Mayyasi’s extensive experience in finance and business operations will be highly valuable as we implement our long-term strategy. Dr. Mayyasi earned a BA in Business Administration from the American University of Beirut. Additionally, he earned a MA and PhD in Economics and Education from Columbia University. He is a Certified Public Accountant in the State of New York, a board member of Holy Name of Mary Montessori School, and Youth Soccer Coach for American Youth Soccer Organization. He resides in Croton-on-Hudson, NY, with his wife and two boys.
Dr. Mayyasi will be located with the business office at the USTA temporary business office space, and the business office team will relocate to 1275 Mamaroneck Avenue in the fall.
