Read The Compass Winter 2021 Issue

"One of the most formidable items in an endurance athlete's toolkit is not only to anticipate walls, but to embrace them. Acknowledging that there will be pain can be incredibly empowering, because it allows for both confronting the reality and maintaining unwavering faith that the challenge is surmountable." - Jamie Williamson, Head of School

The Compass Winter 2021 issue tells the story of how The Windward School has continued persevering through the obstacles presented by the ongoing pandemic. Windward reopened its campus doors for the 2020-21 school year in the fall, with many health and safety procedures implemented, and there was a clear sense of joy and relief throughout the community for the ability to reenter familiar routines.

The 10-page feature lifts up the incredible work of Windward's behind-the-scenes heroes, the 120+ non-academic staff members, who have risen to work in harmony and are "Meeting the Moment." Enjoy vignettes into the highlights reel of some of Windward's staff offices to learn how they have pivoted to adapt to the unique circumstances of this school year and how they have managed to make meaningful contributions to the School's operations.

For our faculty and staff highlights, read about the Technology Office and the team's incredible story of being on the front lines facing the upheaval created by COVID-19 and transforming Windward's multisensory, direct instruction program into a digital reality via remote learning.

Don't miss spotlights on three alumni included in this issue. Tess Flanagan '14 delivered the 2020 Commencement Address, and her inspiring speech to last year's graduating class is reprinted. Attorney Julie Schecter '06 defended her rights to accommodations for herself and others with learning disabilities. Emily Walsh '16 completed the New York City marathon and raised more than $10,000 for cancer research.
