Award-Winning Authors Visit Windward Students

New York Times-bestselling and Newbery award-winning author/illustrator Jerry Craft and award-winning author/illustrator Grace Lin closed out the annual Windward Parents Association (WPA)-sponsored author visits for the 2020-2021 school year. Each year, The Windward School’s WPA sponsors authors and illustrators to share their journey with Windward students. For a school year like no other, students enjoyed two extra author visits than the usual four.

Students in Grades 1-6 were visited virtually by Grace Lin. During her presentation, Ms. Lin read aloud, A Big Mooncake for Little Star, a book she wrote and illustrated. Ms. Lin answered questions from students about the book and shared that the main character Little Star is modeled after her daughter. Following the read aloud, students participated in a drawing activity, where they were able to draw along with Ms. Lin.

Mr. Craft’s virtual visit with Windward students in grades 7-9 included him sharing the writing and illustration process and his story of perseverance that led him to be the successful author and illustrator he is today. During his presentation, he also showed students the John Newbery Medal he received for his graphic novel, New Kid, and explained that the award is given for his distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

Thank you to all Windward families for making these visits possible for students.
